Beginning Knitting - Casting On and Off (Long-tail)
A simple tutorial on using the most common cast on, and how to cast off once you're finished knitting.
The method I use here is called the "long-tail" or "slingshot" cast on. I'm using black yarn on size 11US (8.0mm) needles.
For the cast off I'm using the same yarn on size 13US (9.0mm) needles.

Long Tail Cast on for 2 Toe Up Socks on 1 Circular Needle
Using a long tail cast on is my preferred method of casting on for toe up socks. Works great for knitting 1 or 2 toe up socks at one time, using only 1 circular needle! Using the long tail cast on is easiest for me because it's an easy and classic cast on, and great for the newbie sock knitter who has enough new techniques to learn!

Long tail cast on (thumb cast on)
Long tail cast on is one of the many methods to build your stitches on a needle to begin a knitted project. The name comes from the use of the long tail to make the stitches together with the working yarn. The length of the tail defines the number of stitches which can be cast on - the more stitches you need, the longer the tail will need to be. This method also creates two rows of stitches instead of one as in knit cast on.
