Straw-tailed Whydah singing - audio from my pet bird
Song of my pet bird. He's the one with the orange beak and orange legs. Originally from Africa, Straw-tailed Whydah's (finches) are beautiful birds & singers when in breeding form. After that time, they look like a regular sparrow & lose their long straw tail.
He gets along fine with his Owl Finch companions.

Weird Dance Of The Whydah
He was very active, difficult to capture on video. It took me more than an hour to finally got him "in the act". This is a male pin-tail whydah (vidua macroura) during breeding season, sporting an impressive long tail to attract females. The rest of the year, he looks just like a female (short tail). Whydahs are parasitic breeders, laying eggs in other finches' nests to be cared for by the foster parents. Video taken at Bellagio Conservatory Summer 2013.

Owl Finches & Straw-tailed Whydah
Beautiful, timid and sweet, Owl (Bicheno) Finches have a nice pattern in their plumage. I just love their cheerful personalities (Origin: Australia). My pair of Straw-tailed Whydah's are less charismatic but they make up for any deficiencies with their equally striking plumage. The male is in breeding condition & shows off his long tail quite elegantly while singing sweet songs. The female is displaying her colorful beak which also indicates she is in breeding form. (Origin: Africa)
