Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise Performs Courtship Display

In some birds, males and females are distinguished solely by color. In others, males possess additional ornamentation not seen in females. This is especially true in birds-of-paradise such as the Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise, which has several long tail wires, which it sweeps across a female's face during courtship displays.

Greater Roadrunner foraging

Greater Roadrunners are long-legged, long-tailed, brownish birds of dry country—not quite the purple-plumed Looney Tunes character. They are related to cuckoos, but they spend most of their lives on the ground where they hunt insects, reptiles, and small mammals.

Black Sicklebill: The Thin Blue Line

Explore more at http://www.birdsofparadiseproject.org

Black Sicklebills are elegant, slender birds with long bills and tails. But that all changes when a female comes by. The male transforms into a horizontal comet shape on his display perch. He doesn't use his wings to do this; he uses flank feathers. The comet shape is accentuated by a narrow blue band of iridescence created when those flank feathers line up precisely.

Ribbon-tailed Astrapia: The Three-Foot Tail

Explore more at http://www.birdsofparadiseproject.org

The tremendously long tails of male Ribbon-tailed Astrapias don't help them survive, in fact they get in the way. Males sometimes have to pause to untangle their tails before they can fly away—not a survival advantage. But the tails do help them attract females. And by carefully choosing their mates, the females determine which males' genes—and what kinds of tails—survive to the next generation.
