Long-Tailed Duck Relaxing on the Rocks
At Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth today, while birding with Ron and Noah we spotted a Long-Tailed Duck (oldsquaw) on the rocks nearby. I had never seen an LTD out of the water so I tried to be as stealthy as I could without getting drenched by the waves breaking on the rocky shore. I was successful and got several nice photos of the bird, and decided to roll some video too.
I hope that the bird was not in bad shape. It did appear to be "shivering." but I don't know if that was just the wind...

Long-Tailed Duck
In Bootbay Harbor I spotted about 14 Long-tailed ducks. They are not only gorgeous sea ducks, but they make the funniest call. They are divers and while they typically eat close to the surface they can reach depths of about 200 feet!
