Extra Long, Long Tail Cast-On Knitting Tip

I needed to be sure I wouldn't run out of yarn when casting on 404 stitches for my next project.

This might not be ideal for every project. A fine lace baby blanket, for example, might not suit having that little extra bulk of yarn sewn into the corner, but for something with a seam, like a garment or a cushion cover, I think it would be fine.

For another method and some great tips, here's a video by VeryPinkKnits.

Old Norwegian Sock Cast On/German Twisted Cast On | Hands Occupied

Knit designer Heidi Gustad shares how to do an Old Norwegian Sock Cast On, also known as the German Twisted Cast On. This knitting cast on is similar to the widely-used long tail cast on, but includes an extra twist that provides added yarn to each stitch of the cast on, resulting in a stretchier cast on edge. This cast on is great for socks, mittens and sweater sleeves - really any edge you would want a little stretch for!
