Long-Tailed Duck Relaxing on the Rocks

At Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth today, while birding with Ron and Noah we spotted a Long-Tailed Duck (oldsquaw) on the rocks nearby. I had never seen an LTD out of the water so I tried to be as stealthy as I could without getting drenched by the waves breaking on the rocky shore. I was successful and got several nice photos of the bird, and decided to roll some video too.

I hope that the bird was not in bad shape. It did appear to be "shivering." but I don't know if that was just the wind...

Yokohama Chickens

The first examples arrived in the in Germany in the 1870s.

The birds are highly revered in Japan, where the males are characterized by massive long tail and saddle feathers that grow at a tremendous rate and only moult every 3 years or so.

In Japan they are kept on high perches to show these feathers off.

The Yokohama is a generally calm and gentle bird.

A Townsend's Solitaire drinking

A Townsend's Solitaire drinking in Texas. These are long-tailed gray birds of the high western mountains, descending in the winter to lower elevations where they feed almost exclusively on juniper berries. Look out for their white eye ring, white outer tail feathers and buffy wing patch.
